Being the frugal people we are we decided to take on the move ourselves.  After much measuring, calculating, discussion, and worrying we decided to rent a 26' U-Haul truck, and a 12' trailer.  I figure we did the move for about 1/3 what it would have cost to have it done by professionals.

Fortunately for me, we were able to easily pack all the household goods into the truck without too  much effort.  We used the trailer for all the garage, and outdoor type stuff.

A great deal of credit goes to the expert packing by Bill.  He was able to utilize his time off from work, and really pack stuff carefully and efficiently.  After unloading the only damage was to my office desk, which got a bit tweaked by all the bouncing of the truck.

We did the trip of 2440 miles in 4 days.  I spent about 11-12 hours a day driving the big truck.  I averaged about 7 miles to the gallon (the gas bill for the U-Haul truck was almost $700).

Bill would leave about 30 minutes to an hour after I did in the morning. He would then pass me about half way through the day.  He would continue on to the day's stopping point and get us a room for the night.

After spending the day loading, we enjoy our last California sunset.

I made it over the Sierras at a whopping 5 miles to the gallon.

Into Eastern Nevada. Looks pretty good this time of year.

Heading out of Nevada into Utah.

The Great Salt Flats of Utah.

We made it into Salt Lake City on the first day.

Heading out of SLC on day 2.

Western Utah is very picturesque.

Lots of this kind of formation.

Told ya.

Into Wyoming - I found this the least interesting scenery.

Rawlings Wyoming.

Pretty skies, but that's about it.

Finally it gets interesting heading out of Laramie WY.

And into Nebraska.

Now it gets flat.

With lots of wheat fields.

Iowa was more rolling hills with lots of corn fields.

Who is that handsome guy passing me.

And on to the next stop.

If you build it, they will come.

The Mighty Mississippi.

Old Man River...

Illinois - hmm this looks familiar.

And Indiana..

At last!!!

Here we are at our new home.

Too much stuff.

Looks like everything rode OK.

See - lots of room left over.

After 1 hour of unloading.

2 hours..

3 hours..

4 hours..

5 hours and we are done.

except for putting it all away.
